Does Your Dog Have Allergies?

Does your dog seem to be scratching a lot lately? Do Fido’s eyes look red and runny? If so, your pet may have allergies. Just like people, dogs can be allergic to many different substances. Below, an Ishpeming, MI vet discusses canine allergies.

Symptoms

As noted above, itchiness is one of the most common signs of allergies in dogs. Allergies also cause various skin and fur issues, including hot spots; red, crusty, irritated, or flaky skin; and even hair loss. Fido may sneeze, snore, burp, or get a bit gassy if he has allergies, and his eyes may look red and watery. Allergies can also cause more severe symptoms, such as vomiting and diarrhea. In extreme cases, which are fortunately rare, they can even cause coma, seizure, or death.

Common Allergies

Fido can become allergic to a wide variety of things, and at any point in his life. Many of Man’s Best Friend’s most common allergies are the same things that people react to, such as dust, pollen, dander, mold and mildew, trees, plants, and insect bites. Your pet can also be allergic to a certain material, such as something in your carpets or upholstery, or to an ingredient in his doggy shampoo. Some dogs also develop food allergies.

Making Pets Feel Better

While allergies cannot be cured, they are treatable. If you know or suspect that your pet has allergies, the first thing to do is set up a veterinary appointment. Your vet will need to run some tests to pinpoint exactly what Fido is allergic to. If food allergies are suspected, your dog may be put on a special diet. Once the allergy has been identified, you can move on to discussing treatment options, which can range from medication to specific pet care regimens.

Home Care

There are things you can do at home to help keep your dog comfortable. Vacuuming and dusting frequently, and changing your air filters regularly, will reduce the amount of dust, fur, and dander in your home. We recommend washing your pet’s bedding weekly in hot water. It can also help to wipe down Fido’s paws and belly with a damp cloth after he’s been outside, to remove pollen from his fur. Ask your vet for specific advice.
